The Society undertakes a number of local projects in which Members can participate. The longest-running is the Nightingale Triangle Woodland Restoration project. Since 2018, with the agreement of Bracknell Council, we’ve been working with local volunteers to improve the woodland between Nightingale Crescent and Firlands (adjacent to the Bagshot Road, opposite the Leisure Centre).

The purpose of the project is to restore the native woodland, enhance biodiversity and create a safe and pleasant environment for everybody, with attractive footpaths. To this end we have:
- Improved access for walkers (including adults with children) by creating footpaths using wood chips donated by a local tree surgeon.
- Removed litter, fly-tipped rubbish and dumped garden waste.
- Reduced brambles, holly, saplings, scrub and Rhododendron Ponticum (an invasive shrub that reduces biodiversity and prevents regeneration of native plants) to create woodland glades.
- Installed bird boxes and built log pile habitats for beetles and insects.
- Planted many bulbs and spring flowers, as well as native woodland trees and shrubs, provided by The Woodland Trust.
We regularly survey the many species present in the woodland, monitor fly tipping and dumped garden waste, conduct litter picks and carry out maintenance tasks throughout the year. We also hold occasional Open Days to which we invite residents, our volunteers and representatives of our sponsors.
We’re immensely grateful to our all our hard-working volunteers – both Members and local residents – who’ve given us their wholehearted support and hands-on help over the years. We also give a huge “thank you” to our generous sponsors and to the Bracknell Conservation Volunteers, who come along en masse each Spring, to help with the big jobs!

Our monthly Working Parties are always very well attended, with around fifteen people turning up to each session, but there’s always lots to do so and we’re always on the lookout for additional volunteers. If you fancy getting dirty hands and a huge feeling of achievement, we meet on the first Saturday of each month. To find out more, drop us a line using our contact form.
